COMMUNITY HEALTH EXTENSION WORKERS


Community health Department trains middle level health manpower to improve the health and well-being of the entire community. Student in this program are exposed to theoretical training; supervised community based experience as well as supervised clinical based experience.
There are three cadres in community health practices, they are;
1. Certificate in Community Health (JCHEW)
2. Diploma in Community Health (CHEW)
3. Higher Diploma in Community Health (CHO)

The first two aforementioned cadres are trained in Colleges/schools of Health Technologies while the latter are trained in Teaching Hospitals. The training and practice of Community Health workers is regulated by the Community Health Practitioner Registration Board of Nigeria.


TRAINING OBJECTIVES:

To produce community health worker with appropriate and adequate knowledge, skills and attitude for effective delivery of health care services at the primary health care level

ENTRY REQUIREMENT (CHEW)

5 Credit passes at SSCE or GCE O’LEVEL in WAEC or NECO in Mathematics, English, physics, Chemistry and Biology at not more than two sittings

DURATION OF THE PROGRAM

The program duration is three(3) calendar years for diploma in community Health (CHEW), comprising of both theoretical, supervised community based experience and supervised clinical based experience while certificate in community health (JCHEW) is two calendar year program comprising of theoretical class work as well as supervised community based experience.

BOARD EXAMINATION

At the end of three (3) years of Diploma in Community Health program and two years for certificate in community health, a nationwide examination is conducted by the Community Health Practitioner Registration Board of Nigeria. The successful candidates are then certified and licensed to practice by the same Board of Nigeria.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

CHEW
i. WASCE, SSCE, NECO or GCE O/L with (5) credits at more than two sittings, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Duration : 3 years (Six Semesters)
ii. Junior Community Extension Workers with 2 years’ post qualification experience in addition to the above requirement mentioned, and applicant MUST be registered with the Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria (CHPRBN) and posses a valid practice license.
Duration: 2 Years (Four Semesters)
JCHEW
1. 5 credit passes in WASCE or NECO Examination in English, Mathematics, Biology and any other two subjects at not more than two sittings.
Duration: 2 years (Four Semesters)
